FOGs–Fats, Oils, and Greases

Bacon for breakfast, fried chicken for dinner– Sounds like a great day in Texas!

But what happens to the grease? If you're pouring it down the drain, you're not just losing good grease. You're feeding a monster.

Grease doesn't just wash away. It cools, hardens, and clings to the inside of pipes. Grease mixes with wipes and waste to form something utility crews call a fatberg. Some have grown as big as a bus and block entire sewer lines. These cost utility companies thousands of dollars to clear and can cause sewage to back up into your home and street.

The fix is simple.

Never pour any grease, bacon fat, cooking oil, butter, meat drippings down the drain. Cool it, pour it into a can or jar, and toss it in the trash.

Some grease is worth saving.

For bacon fat, beef tallow, or meat drippings, simply strain and keep in the fridge.

Bacon grease is Texas gold– Perfect for a batch of real Texas fried chicken. Use it to sear steak, season cast iron or flavor a pot of beans.

Cooking oil and butter go straight in the trash.

Cool it, can it, don't pour it. Keep all grease out of your pipes.
